Strata

My new essay Strata (Salt Hill issue 48) describes these two photos I took under the Golden Gate Bridge during an ice storm in January 2007. I mentioned Vertigo in the essay. There are a dozen other films and TV shows shot on location here. The suspenseful climax of the film noir, The Man Who Cheated Himself (1950) takes place at the fort. The chase follows the same path I took to get to the lighthouse.

"I was on the way home when I saw something that made me decide to get off the bus. I saw it from a distance, a flash of light, a glint below the Golden Gate Bridge on its south end. I stared at the light, hoping to get a better view as the bus drove on. It disappeared briefly when the bus turned around a bend. When the view reappeared, the light was gone."
